Over the last two years, Care Earth Trust has been involved in direct implementation of wetland restoration projects which include the introduction of element of sustainability and community participation. Till date, Care Earth has successfully completed the restoration of the Narayanapuram Lake that drains into the Pallikaranai Marshland, the Perungalathur Periya Eri as well as the Puducheri Keni kulam and the Odai keni kulam in Sholinganallur.

Restoration activities essentially include cleaning of the lake, water monitoring, removal of invasive species, strengthening of the bund and plantation on the bund. Restoration, monitoring and evaluation plan for the lakes are being developed as well.

Wetlands and waterbodies are features that cannot be taken for granted in a landscape. More often than not, their conditions are deplorable in urban and peri-urban settings. Ecological restoration ensures their survival by protecting the wetland’s primary purpose–to capture, sustain and provide freshwater–in addition to enhancing biodiversity in the region. Our restoration work revolves around conserving waterbodies in an environmentally sustainable manner to ensure the wetland ecosystem lives and thrives.
